If you or the club or organization you belong to are interesting in helping our environment, consider joining with the Stream Teams for one of our events.

Adopt - A - Waterway

The newest of our programs, the Stream Team Adopt-A-Waterway is coordinated with the Wayne County Department of the Environment Watershed Management Division. Volunteers receive training in how to use Benthic monitoring to monitor the health of the watershed. The types and numbers of benthic macro invertebrates found are used to assess water quality over time. Each team of volunteers samples two sites under the direction of a trained leader. The first training session will take place August 16th for the fall kick off. From there sampling is done in the fall and spring with results coordinated through the Stream Teams. Call Mr. Bruce Szczechowski or Mr. John Nasarzewski at 734-246-4611 for more info or email stream team.

Here are the Stream Team areas of operation. If you live in one of the areas in the Watershed Boundary and are interested helping out, contact us. Select the map for a larger image. It will let you know what watershed you are in.

Easy to join -- Level one

There are two other programs of student interest. The first is the most popular and easiest. Simply, for one of the Stream Team events during the year, contact us and let us know your group of organization will be attending. This will allow us to get your group's information and have the name placed on our tee shirts for one year. That is all there is. Click here for a list of past participants. (.doc file)

Sponsorship -- Level two

Of course, some other groups and organizations wish to do more. For these groups and organizations, we ask for a donation to help us further our work. The size of the donation is up to your organization (schools have donated from $50 - 500 in the past). What we offer in return is the usage of all of our equipment for projects which you may be considering delivered to your school! So, besides helping the Stream Teams, you get to use the following:

shovels 7 dozen
rakes 7 dozen
wheelbarrows 12 ct.
misc hand tools 5 dozen

The advantage is that you don't have to store this large amount of equipment for your project. There is no minimum amount, just do what your group can afford. Current school sponsorships include:

  1. Ecorse High School
  2. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Schools
  3. Riverview Memorial Elementary School
  4. Southgate Anderson High School

Other Options -- Water Monitoring

Maybe your organization is interesting in something even more challenging. The Stream Teams are also looking for interested groups to participate in our water testing program. We ask for $250 to help run the program and provide the kits and equipment you need. If funding is a problem, we will help you to secure funding for the project, so there may be no out of pocket expenses. We just ask that you would commit to testing at least twice yearly for different environmental parameters, depending on your interest or age group. There is no paperwork, just verbal agreements. See the Water Testing Program link for more details.
